What age is best for newborn photos?

Welcoming a newborn into your family is one of the most precious occasions, filled with joy and wonder. You’ve just gotten home from hospital and you’re in awe of this little person who has joined your family. So when is the best time to have your newborn photoshoot? Let’s take a look!

The first two weeks: This is the ideal time if you want those adorable images of your baby in those irresistible cosy, sleepy poses. During this time, newborns are typically more likely to sleep soundly and deeply, making it easier to achieve those curled-up, beautiful positions so iconic with newborn photography. Super fresh newborns have delicate, natural features such as tiny wrinkles, soft fuzz, and velvety skin that can change so quickly.

3-6 weeks: Is three weeks too late for newborn photos? NO WAY! It’s totally ok to wait a little longer to settle into newborn life. Whilst we may not get those curled up, sleepy photos above, there is so much sweetness to capture (and I always try to do as many sleepy shots as possible!). Having said that, I recently had a 5 week old who slept the entire photoshoot!

After 6 weeks:

You might feel a little less sleep-deprived, and bubs has worked out day and night, so you might be feeling a bit more human and a bit more relaxed and ready to have a photoshoot. Your bub is definitely more alert and might even be smiling (gosh that is a good day when they first smile!). The photo gallery will be filled with more awake shots. It might be likely they’ll fall asleep at some point but it is more difficult to get them into those ‘newborn poses’. In these sessions I really aim to capture as much of the connection between you and your gorgeous newborn. If you prefer a photoshoot in your home, this can be an ideal time, especially if you’ve got a toddler or older sibling who is more comfortable at home.

Whatever timing you choose, we will be able to capture some beautiful memories for you! In every session I work around baby’s pace. Whatever baby’s needs are – a top up of a feed or an extra cuddle, some flexibility is needed! The ultimate goal is to make sure I can capture those wonderful, timeless moments for you.

And don’t forget a little later on about other baby portrait sessions such as a Sitter session or a Cake Smash & Splash session or even an outdoor Family Session.
